The Brenda Strafford Centre has been active in working with agencies to collaborate on providing services in the community.
Health Services
A Public Health Nurse visits The Centre once a week to help residents deal with health related problems. The Nurse assists mothers with the care of newly born babies and provides information on numerous health topics.
Pets Access League Society (P.A.L.S.)
Two friendly dogs come in to interact with the moms and children every second week for an hour. The goal of this program is to provide an opportunity for children and adults to cope with loss or loneliness, reduce stress, and promote nurturing behaviour.
Literacy & Parenting Skills (L.A.P.S.)
Often one of the first goals identified by moms when they enter The Centre is aid with parenting. We have developed an ongoing partnership with LAPS to assist them with this goal in a supportive group format. LAPS is a program aimed at increasing literacy skills while providing parenting information.
Youth Volunteer Corps (Y.V.C.)
The YVC encourages youth to become positively involved in the community through volunteering. Teens have been assisting us by implementing planned activities for children during the summer months and by providing childcare for
The Centre over the winter. Through these teens' dedication, our children experience positive role models and the mothers are given valuable respite time.
The Centre was honoured in June 2001 by the YVC as a very important community agency.
Student Practicum
The Brenda Strafford Centre offers practicums to students from the University of Calgary and Mount Royal College. Social Work Department Students receive hands-on work experience, instruction, and supervision. Students have the opportunity to co-facilitate groups, provide individual counselling, and develop special projects.
Calgary Dollars
The Calgary Dollars is a barter community that is based out of the Arusha Centre in Inglewood. They have a strong network of individuals and businesses who barter services and goods for Calgary Dollars currency. They are currently offering memberships to interested families at
The Centre.
Bowen
Bowen has adopted The Centre as a charity with whom they wish to offer volunteer services. Bowen offers computer and employment training services and workshops for women at
The Centre. They have also "adopted" an apartment as a formalized way to offer on-going donations and housekeeping support.
Volunteer Program
We actively recruit volunteers to support the programming at The Centre. The Volunteer Program exists to support the services provided by The Brenda Strafford Centre. The overall goal of the program is to ensure the maintenance of well trained, committed volunteers whose interests and abilities are congruent with the aims and philosophies of The Brenda Strafford Centre.
Volunteers can add support, knowledge, and enthusiasm, which can benefit both residents and staff. There are volunteers working in the areas of Child Care, Office Assistance, Maintenance, Housekeeping, Donations, Support and Special Events.
If you are interested in volunteering at the Centre, please call us at 270-7240. |
