Chair in Geriatric Medicine

History

In 1987, the Brenda Strafford Foundation generously endowed a Chair in Geriatric Medicine at the University of Calgary. This endowment has provided a nucleus for development in this new and vital area of medical education, clinical services and research within the Faculty of Medicine.

In 1990 Dr. David Hogan was appointed The Brenda Strafford Chair of Geriatric Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine. Since Dr. Hogan’s arrival, several initiatives have been undertaken in this field including the development of the Southern Alberta Regional Geriatric Program and the establishment of a Division of Geriatric Medicine within the Faculty of Medicine.

Goals

The purpose of the Chair in Geriatric Medicine is to provide a focus and source of leadership for the development of education, research and community service in the field of Geriatric Medicine. The Chair will build upon existing resources at the University of Calgary and will serve to stimulate the development of academic excellence in Geriatric Medicine.

Provide leadership in developing educational and research programs including innovative geriatric services in support of these programs.

Attract to the University outstanding students, research associates and faculty.

"There are now well in excess of 23 million North Americans over the age of 65. And we are told that the figure may exceed 55 million by the year 2030. This increase is due largely to medical science which in this country has created a specialized science to enhance the enjoyment and productivity of people in their later years."

- Dr. Barrie I. Strafford
